NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has said the alliance is prepared to “intimidate” Russia to deter future provocations.
This was reported by Sky News.
In particular, Rutte assured that NATO is ready for a brutal response to Russian provocations.
“But we must always do this by carefully assessing the situation,” the Secretary General explained.
On September 23, NATO ambassadors also convened at Estonia’s request after Russian fighter jets violated its airspace.
The meeting produced a statement in which the alliance condemned the incursion, describing it as part of “a broader pattern of increasingly irresponsible behavior by Russia.”
The Kremlin’s actions, it noted, amount to an escalation that puts lives at risk.
“Russia should have no doubt: NATO and its allies, in accordance with international law, will use all necessary military and non-military means to defend themselves and deter threats from every direction. We will continue to respond in the manner, time, and scope of our choosing,” the statement said
It is also noted that these and other actions by Russia will not compel NATO to abandon its support for Ukraine.
As a reminder, Estonia stated that three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated its airspace and were there for 12 minutes.
The Estonian Defense Ministry later reported that the incursion of Russian MiG-31 fighters into the country’s airspace was deliberate.
Earlier, Russia carried out a massive attack on Ukraine, during which some drones violated Polish airspace. As a result, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the launch of Operation Eastern Sentinel.
