NATO plans to create a robotic de-escalation zone on the border with Russia and Belarus over the next two years. The project involves strengthening defenses and accumulating additional weapons stocks in countries on the Alliance’s eastern flank.

This is reported by Welt am Sonntag .

The new Eastern Flank Deterrence Line defense concept was presented by Bundeswehr Brigadier General Thomas Loewin, the first NATO official to publicly outline the details of this approach to deterrence in the eastern direction.

According to the general, the implementation of the concept is planned to be completed, if possible, by the end of 2027. It involves the creation of an automated zone along the border with Russia and Belarus, as well as a significant increase in weapons stocks in NATO border states.

“We will see significantly larger stockpiles than before in NATO countries bordering Russia,” said Thomas Lovin.

He clarified that these are weapons and ammunition depots that will be used to re-equip defense systems in the automated zone, as well as to equip Alliance forces.

According to Lovin, NATO plans to build a multi-layered defense system that will combine conventional forces, engineered obstacles, and modern technologies.

“The alliance intends to build a comprehensive, multi-layered defense system along the border with Russia and Belarus and create a robotic or automated zone in the border strip with the enemy, which he will have to overcome first,” said Thomas Lovin.

The general noted that the intelligence sensor system and automated and robotic weapons should stop Russian forces at the initial stage of a possible attack, while at the same time preserving the lives of NATO service members.

According to him, the new defense zone on the border with Russia and Belarus will be mostly uninhabited.

By the way, the head of the Ukrainian mission to NATO, Alena Getmanchuk, stated that the North Atlantic Alliance is actively involved in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine . This includes both direct participation in discussing security guarantees and an indirect role through the coordination of military assistance.
