NATO commented on statements about the possible expulsion of Spain following threats from Donald Trump . They emphasized that such actions are not envisaged by the Alliance’s founding documents.

As reported by the BBC , a NATO spokesman noted that the founding treaty does not contain any provisions for the suspension or expulsion of member states.

The Alliance’s reaction came amid reports of possible “punishment” against Spain for its refusal to support the US military operation against Iran. According to media reports, Washington subsequently began discussing options for pressuring allies who did not support the US actions.

NATO emphasized that there are no mechanisms for excluding countries from the Alliance, which effectively refutes such assumptions.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that after the end of the war in Iran, the United States will reconsider its membership in the North Atlantic Alliance .

As a reminder, Trump may begin the formal process of withdrawing the United States from NATO . This decision is seen not only as a threat to allied solidarity but also as part of a domestic electoral strategy to boost his ratings.

Incidentally, former US Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg spoke about the possible need to create alternative military alliances to NATO . He also suggested the possibility of the US invoking Article 13 of the Alliance to prepare for withdrawal.
