NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that in December, Russia suffered extremely high casualties in the war against Ukraine – about a thousand military deaths every day.

This is evidenced by the transcript of Rutte’s speech, published on the NATO website.

Speaking during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the NATO chief stressed that he was talking about the dead, not the wounded. According to him, the Russian army had lost more than 30,000 soldiers in just one month.

Rutte drew a historical parallel, noting that during the war in Afghanistan in the 1980s, the Soviet Union lost about 20,000 soldiers in ten years, while today Russia is losing more than 30,000 per month in fighting in Ukraine.

At the same time, the NATO Secretary General emphasized that, despite active discussions in Europe on other international issues, in particular the situation around Greenland, the key challenge remains the war against Ukraine.

According to him, Russia continues to strike Ukraine’s energy infrastructure using missiles and drones. Rutte drew attention to the difficult conditions the country is facing, including severe frosts – down to minus 20 degrees in Kyiv – and limited electricity supply, which currently covers only about 60% of needs.

The head of the Alliance also emphasized that, despite significant losses, Russia is not reducing the intensity of its attacks and is continuing offensive operations at the front.

In addition, Rutte reported that financial assistance from the European Commission in the amount of 90 billion euros will not be available before spring – in March, April and May, as its implementation takes time.

He also noted that Ukraine is experiencing an acute shortage of interceptors and American weapons, as European stocks of such weapons are virtually exhausted.

In conclusion, the NATO Secretary General emphasized that support for Ukraine should remain a top priority for the West, because the security of not only Europe, but also the United States depends on it.

As a reminder, as of the morning of January 22, Russia has lost about 1,230,810 military personnel since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Over the course of the day, the enemy’s losses in manpower reached 1,070 people.
