A future peace agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation may state that Russia de facto controls part of Ukraine’s territory.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said this on ABC News.

“When it comes to negotiations, and let’s hope that Friday will be an important step in this process. It will be about territory. It will be about security guarantees, of course, but also about the absolute need to recognize that Ukraine decides its own future, that Ukraine must be a sovereign state that decides its own geopolitical future,” Rutte said.

The NATO chief also acknowledged the reality that Russia controls part of Ukraine’s pre-war territory.

“The question will be how to move forward after the ceasefire, including what that means in terms of security guarantees for Ukraine,” he said.

Rutte stated that when the issue of territory and its recognition is raised, it is possible that the agreement will recognize that Russia de facto controls part of Ukraine.

“This must be effective recognition, not de jure political recognition,” Rutte said.

Rutte previously stated that NATO countries will continue to supply weapons to Ukraine regardless of the outcome of the meeting scheduled for August 15 between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin .

Recall that US President Donald Trump informed European leaders of his intention to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin , and later to organize a trilateral meeting with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
