A two-day NATO summit begins in Turkey on Tuesday, July 7, bringing together leaders from the alliance’s 32 member countries. Among the main topics of the meeting will be increased defense spending, strengthening European security, and Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Reuters reports this.

US President Donald Trump is expected to attend the summit. According to the agency, his demands for increased European defense spending will be one of the key issues in the negotiations.

The White House has long called on European allies to take greater responsibility for the continent’s security, and the United States has previously announced plans to reduce its military presence in Europe.

According to Reuters, NATO countries plan to confirm their intention to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. The draft final declaration also notes that European allies, together with Canada, have already increased defense investments by $139 billion.

“European allies, together with Canada, have increased their defense investments by $139 billion and are ready to take on greater responsibility for the defense of the Alliance,” the draft declaration, seen by Reuters, says.

Special attention during the summit is planned to be paid to Russia’s war against Ukraine and further support for Kyiv.

The meeting is also expected to include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and South Korean President Lee Jae-myeon.

As a reminder, US President Donald Trump plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the NATO summit in Turkey . After talks with Zelensky, the American leader is likely to contact Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
