Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has submitted a bill to the US Congress that would withdraw the United States from NATO.
He announced this on his X social media account on Wednesday, December 10.
Massie called NATO “a relic of the Cold War” and said that the United States should redirect Alliance funds to its own defense instead of supporting “socialist countries.” In the text of the bill, HR 6508, the congressman demands that the president officially notify the North Atlantic bloc of America’s withdrawal.
The document notes that NATO’s original purpose no longer meets the current national interests of the United States. It also emphasizes that the Alliance’s European members have sufficient military and economic potential to ensure their own security.
The bill also stipulates that American taxes should not be used to fund the organization’s shared budgets.
As reported, European countries are preparing for a possible invasion by Russia without US participation, amid the reduction of the American military presence on the continent. NATO countries in Europe are already adapting defense plans and strengthening their own military capabilities.
