The North Atlantic Alliance is actively discussing the introduction of a unified approach to responding to Russian aircraft that may pose a threat to the security of member countries.
This was reported by The Telegraph, citing sources in defense circles.
According to the publication, it is about agreeing on clear principles for the use of force against enemy targets – primarily when it comes to Russian fighters armed with air-to-surface missiles that approach or cross the airspace of NATO countries.
“Alliance defense ministers are seeking to reach an agreement that would allow such aircraft to be considered a potential target for destruction,” the source notes.
Discussion of the new response mechanism is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, October 15, during a meeting of the heads of defense agencies of NATO member states.
The reason for such decisive steps was the increase in the number of provocations by Russian aviation near NATO borders. The allies see this as a systemic threat that requires rapid and coordinated responses.
It should be noted that NATO is discussing a more decisive response to Russia’s provocative actions, including the possibility of deploying strike drones near the Russian border and changing the rules for opening fire on Russian aircraft.
As a reminder, former head of US Army Europe, General Ben Hodges, stated that if Russia decides to start a war against a NATO member country, the military response will be immediate and devastating. According to him, the Alliance’s strikes will destroy key Russian military facilities – including in Kaliningrad and Sevastopol – in the first hours after the conflict begins.
