Nearly 1,600 people infected with West Nile virus in Europe

Since the spring, 1,569 cases of West Nile virus infection have been recorded in Europe. All of these cases are local – people became infected in their own countries, not while traveling abroad.

Spiegel writes about this, citing data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

As of September 23, the largest number of cases was detected in Italy – about 696. In Greece, 355 people fell ill, in Spain – 125, in France – 102, and in Romania – 91.

Another 69 cases were recorded in North Macedonia, 46 in Serbia and 28 in the Netherlands.

Four cases of infection have been detected in Germany. They were registered in Rhineland-Palatinate, Leipzig and Berlin.

West Nile virus is primarily transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. In some cases, the infection can cause severe and life-threatening illness, according to the World Health Organization.
