American voters are increasingly concerned about potential moral lapses within President Donald Trump’s administration. This discontent is exacerbated by rising living costs and the unpopular war with Iran.
This was reported by the Financial Times , citing a survey by the FT and Focaldata.
According to the study, approximately 69% of registered voters and almost half of those who supported Trump in the 2024 election expressed concern about moral turpitude in the White House. Nearly half of all respondents believe corruption has become a greater problem than under previous presidents.
One of the main drivers of discontent is the worsening economic situation. According to the publication, the war in Iran has contributed to rising fuel prices: diesel has risen 70% compared to last year, to $6.32 per gallon.
At the same time, 56% of respondents reported that their financial situation had worsened since the beginning of the year. More than a quarter of respondents were forced to cut spending on food and healthcare.
Further outrage has been raised by the Trump family’s income from cryptocurrency projects, which, according to the FT, amounts to at least $1 billion. Questions have also been raised about government contracts awarded to donors connected to the president’s family.
“When a family reads an article about the president’s cryptocurrency fortune while deciding whether to postpone an expensive doctor’s appointment, they see that the system works for someone else—just not for them,” said Columbia Business School professor Jeremy Ney.
The White House denies the accusations and claims the president is acting in the interests of the American people. Administration spokesman Davis Ingle emphasized that there was no conflict of interest, and that Trump was re-elected thanks to broad voter support.
He also said the administration has launched a major crackdown on federal fraud, while Democrats in Congress, he said, refuse to stop the waste.
Corruption and the high cost of living are becoming key issues in the lead-up to the US midterm elections. More than 40% of respondents said rising prices motivate them to vote for Democrats. Republicans fear that Trump’s low approval ratings and the impact of high tariffs could hinder the party’s ability to retain control of Congress.
The Focaldata poll was conducted from October 16 to 18 among 1,648 registered voters. The margin of error is 2.8 percentage points.
