Negotiations between Zelensky and Trump’s special representatives concluded in Kyiv: key points

The first round of talks between President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President’s special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner concluded in Kyiv. The parties discussed security and economic guarantees for Ukraine, preparations for winter, and plans to continue the diplomatic process with the participation of European partners.

“We have already had two panel discussions. Later we will go to the press and there will be a press briefing. I am very glad that we are now moving on to the third discussion. It will be with representatives of the leaders of Britain, France and Germany,” Zelensky said, adding that the presence of Europeans at the negotiations is important for Kyiv.

At the beginning of the meeting, the president jokingly thanked the American envoys for their visit.

“Today you worked even better than the Patriot systems for our citizens who are in the capital. Thank you, come more often. And our people will have the opportunity to live a little longer,” Zelenskyy said.

He also noted that the topic of the Patriot system remains very relevant for Ukraine.

Kushner revealed what task US President Donald Trump’s team is currently working on.

“The challenge that President Trump, Steve and I are working on is to create a ‘peace package.’ President Trump is focused on how to create a foundation that would actually promote peace,” Kushner said.

According to him, the ultimate goal is to reach a state where there will be no hostilities between countries.

Witkoff reported on the progress of the negotiation process, which lasted from Moscow to Kyiv.

“We made significant progress in Moscow. There were many important, compelling ideas that we discussed there and now in Kyiv,” Witkoff said.

He added that his and Kushner’s task is to bring the parties’ positions closer together and establish channels of communication, and the process has been developing constructively over the past 48 hours.

Zelensky noted that the negotiations concerned not only the ceasefire, but also the future of Ukraine as a whole.

“We are talking not only about security guarantees, but also about economic guarantees for Ukraine to recover, rebuild,” the president said. He added that a strong Ukrainian army remains the main guarantee of the state’s security.

According to Axios , Zelensky also asked the United States to urgently provide Ukraine with a “winter package” of interceptor missiles for the Patriot system.

“If the war continues into the winter, we are very much counting on the winter package, which I discussed in detail today with Steve, with Jared, with our European partners,” the president said, adding that the partners support these plans for air defense, energy, and the supply of American liquefied gas.

The parties reported that next week Ukraine, the United States and Europe will discuss new ideas for ending the war, and a new trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, Russia and the United States may take place in the near future. Kushner noted that the previous trilateral format of negotiations had proven productive.

“When we had the trilateral meeting, Steve and I actually enjoyed it a lot more because everyone was talking to each other about what exactly is needed for lasting peace,” Kushner said.

Zelenskyy reported that Ukraine’s position on Donbas remains unchanged.

“Regarding Donbas – unchanged. The Donbas issue is not only an issue of Donbas. I believe that this is an issue of this war,” the president said.

He also suggested that after the elections in Russia, there could be a mobilization aimed specifically at this direction, and emphasized the need to finance Ukraine’s military and humanitarian needs for the winter.
