New blockades in Russia: Russians may lose contact with the outside world
Russia is preparing new restrictions on communications that could affect not only private calls but also citizens’ access to foreign services. Officially, the initiative is presented as a protective measure, but experts warn of serious consequences for freedom of information and communications.
This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation.
At a meeting of the human rights council, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his intention to block phone calls from countries Moscow considers unfriendly. He said this was necessary to “digitally protect citizens” from scammers, who have been widely discussed in Russian media in recent weeks.
In fact, such decisions further isolate the population from outside information and alternative news sources. The Kremlin consistently restricts any channels through which Russians can maintain contact with the world or receive independent information.
In recent days, WhatsApp, FaceTime, Snapchat, and the popular platform Roblox among children and teenagers have stopped working in Russia under the pretext of “security risks.” At the same time, the authorities are reducing access to services to circumvent censorship and massively disabling mobile internet in various regions.
All of these actions fit into the strategy of creating a so-called “sovereign internet,” where the state controls all communication channels and sources of information. This allows the Kremlin to create a closed media space and limit Russians from receiving any independent information about events inside and outside the country.
As reported, Russia has officially approved mass restrictions on mobile internet , saying such measures are supposedly needed to counter drones. The Kremlin called the shutdowns “justified and necessary.”
