New blow to Russia’s oil industry: Gazprom complex hit in Bashkortostan

Ukrainian defense forces have struck a large oil refining and petrochemical complex, Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat, in the Russian region of Bashkortostan. On the morning of August 13, local residents reported smoke in the area of the plant.

Before this, Bashkortostan declared a drone emergency. After the attack, eyewitnesses recorded smoke rising from the industrial complex. Information about the nature of the damage and possible consequences of the attack is currently being clarified.

Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat is one of the largest oil refining and petrochemical enterprises in Russia. The complex is located in the city of Salavat and is part of the Gazprom structure.

The enterprise has been operating since 1948 and combines oil refining, gas chemical plants and the Monomer plant. Its design capacity is about 10 million tons of oil per year. In 2022, the actual processing volume was about 6.8 million tons.

The complex produces gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel, bitumen, lubricants, polyethylene, ammonia, methanol, butyl alcohols and other products.

Thus, it is not just an oil refinery, but a large complex with a full cycle of hydrocarbon processing. Its work is important for both the Russian fuel sector and petrochemical production.
