The United Kingdom and Germany are set to sign a new security cooperation agreement — the largest between the two countries since World War II.

According to Bloomberg, the ceremony will take place on July 17 in London with the participation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The main focus of the agreement is mutual assistance in the event of a military attack and readiness to counter common threats. According to German officials, the document is not only a reaction to the Kremlin’s aggression, but also a signal against the backdrop of the uncertain future of transatlantic relations if Donald Trump returns to power in the United States.

Despite the high-profile defense commitments, the new pact is not intended to replace NATO’s Article 5, but rather to supplement it in the face of a changed geopolitical reality.

One of the key projects envisaged by the agreement is the joint development of the Deep Precision Strike missile system with a range of over 2,000 km. This will not only strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities, but also boost the defense industries of both countries.

The agreement also touches on trade, transport and the fight against illegal migration. In particular, Germany intends to amend its legislation to criminalize the facilitation of illegal entry into the UK – in response to the challenges posed by Brexit.

Recall that Germany is strengthening its own defense capabilities – the defense budget will increase to 62.4 billion euros this year, and security spending will reach 2.4% of GDP . By 2029, Germany plans to reach a level of 3.5% of defense spending from GDP, which is the highest figure in recent decades.

As reported, the German Armed Forces believe that Russia poses a serious threat to the country and Europe as a whole.

In addition, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer promised to put the country on “combat alert” amid growing serious threats.
