The European Union has set a new condition for Ukraine to join the EU: Kyiv must show real results in prosecuting corruption at the highest level, European Commissioner for Justice Michael McGrath said.
This is reported by POLITICO.
The European Commissioner stressed that no candidate country can move towards the EU without an effective system for investigating and punishing corruption crimes. He noted that Ukraine is making “maximum efforts” but must demonstrate concrete results – including convictions in cases of high-ranking officials.
McGrath stressed that the standard is the same for all, and that justice and rule of law reforms are the foundation of European integration. He also added that the EU is in open dialogue with Kyiv, but if the requirements are not met, member states will not support Ukraine’s next steps.
POLITICO recalled that the “Midas” case, which concerns corruption at the top of power, is being investigated at a very sensitive moment – when Donald Trump is pressuring President Zelensky to accept a peace agreement favorable to the Kremlin.
McGrath concluded that the EU is closely monitoring developments and is in constant contact with the Ukrainian authorities on all issues of concern.
As previously reported, European Solidarity stated that searches at the head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, show the failure of attempts to save him politically by appointing him as the chief negotiator.
As a reminder, People’s Deputy Bohdan Yaremenko stated that the situation around Andriy Yermak has become critical and cannot be corrected.
