North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has attended a ceremony in Pyongyang to mark the completion of a new residential area for the families of soldiers who died in overseas military operations. The new complex, he said, should become a symbol of honoring the fallen soldiers.

This is reported by Reuters .

According to the state news agency, during the speech, Kim Jong-un said that the new residential area symbolized the “spirit and sacrifice” of the fallen soldiers. He said that the housing was designed so that the families of the fallen could “be proud of their sons and husbands and live happily.”

“I insisted on completing this project even one day early, hoping that it could bring at least a little relief to the families of the military,” Kim Jong-un said.

Published photos indicate that the North Korean leader was accompanied by his daughter, Zhu E, during the event. Together with her father, she communicated with the families of the deceased soldiers and visited new residential buildings.

According to South Korean, Ukrainian, and Western sources, North Korea sent about 14,000 troops to fight on Russia’s side against Ukraine in 2024 as part of a defense agreement. More than 6,000 of them are reported to have died.

In recent months, the DPRK authorities have held a number of public events to honor the fallen soldiers, including the opening of a memorial complex in the country’s capital.

The opening ceremony of the residential complex took place on the eve of the 9th Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, which is scheduled for the end of February and is intended to be a political event to present the achievements and priorities of state policy.

It was previously reported that North Korean troops continue to participate in Russia’s war against Ukraine on the side of the aggressor country . As of January 2026, units of the North Korean army are in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, from where they carry out attacks on border communities in Ukraine.

Recall that North Korean soldiers sent to fight for Russia in Ukraineare forced to blow themselves up with grenades if they risk being captured . Such orders from Kim Jong-un are reported by South Korean sources.

As reported, the DPRK has decided to make the Russian language a mandatory school subject, starting from grade 4. This decision was part of the expansion of humanitarian and educational cooperation between the DPRK and Russia.
