French law enforcement officers have arrested new suspects in the high-profile robbery at the Louvre Museum that took place more than a week ago.
Le Figaro and the French channel BMFTV write about this, citing sources.
According to BMFTV, police arrested one man in Paris on October 29. He is suspected of involvement in the group that robbed the museum and of being present at the crime scene. Meanwhile, Le Figaro reports that four people have been detained, including “one of the main suspects in the case.”
Two other suspects have already been charged and remanded in custody. One is a 34-year-old Algerian citizen who worked as a delivery driver and has a prior conviction for theft; the other is a 39-year-old illegal courier and taxi driver, also previously convicted of theft. Both have partially admitted their involvement in the crime.
In total, four suspects were sought in the case: two who directly entered the gallery, and two accomplices who facilitated the escape on scooters.
Investigators are also investigating the possibility of inside help – according to preliminary data, someone from the security service may have passed information about the Louvre’s security system to the criminals.
It was previously reported that a high-profile robbery occurred in Paris on the morning of October 19 : thieves stole nine jewels from Napoleon’s collection. The incident forced the Louvre to close for the day. Within minutes, they entered the Apollo Gallery and stole several jewels from the French crown collection.
