New rules for obtaining a driver’s license have been introduced in Ukraine

New rules for determining the need for adaptation of cars for drivers based on their health status have been in effect in Ukraine since November 1. Now, a doctor will assess whether a person needs an adapted car, and specific equipment will be determined by authorized employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs service centers.
The changes are provided for by Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 668.
During a medical examination, the doctor will assess the person’s health and indicate in the medical certificate whether the person needs a vehicle adaptation for safe driving.
If such a need is confirmed, employees of the regional service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will determine what adaptations are needed. This may be a special manual control or additional devices. At the same time, based on the results of the assessment, they may determine that the vehicle adaptation is not necessary.
After the assessment, the driver will be issued a separate certificate. Information about the required equipment will be entered in column 12 of the driver’s license in the form of special codes.
The new rules only apply to people who need special equipment to drive due to a medical condition. They do not require all drivers to undergo an urgent medical examination or exchange their licenses.
