New US sanctions against Russia may be postponed: Trump proposes changes

US President Donald Trump has proposed amending a bill on new sanctions against Russia to include Iran, a move that could significantly complicate and delay the passage of the document in the US Congress.

According to the publication, a final decision on the bill, co-authored by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, is unlikely to be made anytime soon. The House of Representatives will not be able to begin considering it until Congress returns from summer recess in September.
In addition, an expedited vote in the Senate would require unanimous support from all 100 senators, making the bill’s prospects for quick approval much more difficult. According to one of Politico’s interlocutors, the bill could not be passed until late 2026.
“I would like them to add Iran to the list of those who are subject to tariffs, not just sanctions. I think that’s important. That’s what Lindsey wanted,” Donald Trump told reporters at the White House.
As the publication notes, the president’s initiative has raised concerns among Democrats, who fear that expanding the president’s authority to impose tariffs could be used not only against Russia or Iran, but also as a tool to pressure US allies.
The publication adds that Ukraine is interested in the speedy adoption of the document, because after it enters into force, the sanctions will need some time to take full effect.
As reported, a group of US senators announced that they had agreed with the Donald Trump administration on a bill on “hellish sanctions” against Russia.
As a reminder, the US Senate held a procedural vote on Tuesday, July 28, on a bill to tighten sanctions against Russia. The document, co-authored by Senator Lindsey Graham, may be put to a final vote as early as next week.
