New Year’s Eve turned into a tragedy: dozens killed in Switzerland

A massive fire broke out during a New Year’s Eve party in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, which could have claimed the lives of dozens of people.

This was reported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to Italian sources, the Valais cantonal police have reported around 40 deaths and nearly 100 injuries in the fire at the Constellation bar. Swiss authorities have not yet confirmed these figures, only saying “dozens of victims”.

The Italian Foreign Ministry said the fire showed no signs of arson and occurred at night during New Year’s celebrations. Due to the severe burns, rescuers are currently unable to identify the deceased.

The Italian ambassador to Switzerland and the Italian consul general in Geneva are already on their way to Crans-Montana. In Rome, the Foreign Ministry has activated an operational headquarters with the participation of crisis services to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy and verify information about possible Italian victims.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said the investigation is ongoing. Swiss prosecutors have ruled out a terrorist attack and said the previously reported explosion did not occur.

The fire at the Constellation Bar broke out around 1:30 a.m. local time.

Earlier, it was reported that a passenger train derailed in the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexico, killing at least 13 people . Another 98 passengers were injured, some of whom were hospitalized.
