New Zealand has expanded sanctions against the Russian oil industry and the so-called “shadow fleet” that helps circumvent international restrictions.

This was stated by New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters during a meeting with his colleagues from Scandinavian countries in Stockholm, Reuters reports.

Peters announced that Wellington is imposing restrictions on another 65 vessels owned or used by “shadow fleet” structures.

Companies and individuals from Belarus, Iran, and North Korea involved in the processing, transportation, and financing of Russian oil were also sanctioned.

The so-called shadow fleet consists of tankers carrying sanctioned cargo, including from Iran, Russia and Venezuela, using false documents, altered vessel names and fake coordinates to conceal their true routes.

“These actors are part of a broader network that enables the trade in Russian oil, undermining the global community’s efforts to reduce Russia’s funding of its illegal war.

“By striking at the oil supply chain, New Zealand firmly supports international efforts to force Moscow to the negotiating table,” Peters stressed.

New Zealand has joined a number of countries that are restricting the activities of “shadow carriers” of Russian energy resources in order to reduce the Kremlin’s revenues from oil exports.

Recall that in September, New Zealand joined the European Union initiative and is also lowering the price ceiling for Russian crude oil .
