No chance of bypass: European Union blocks gas supplies from Russia via Turkey

The European Union is preparing for a complete embargo on Russian gas, which will come into effect at the end of 2027. But already now, member states are looking for ways to close all possible loopholes through which energy from Russia can enter Europe.
According to Bloomberg, Denmark, which currently holds the presidency of the EU Council, has proposed tough new restrictions for importers. According to them, companies supplying gas to the European market will have to provide clear evidence that the fuel is not of Russian origin.
Particular attention is being paid to the route through the TurkStream gas pipeline, which connects Russia with Southeastern Europe. There are fears that this particular route could be used for “hidden” supplies.
The Danish proposal clearly states:
“Gas entering the EU through the borders with Russia or Belarus, as well as through the Strandzha 2 / Malkoclar (TurkStream) point, is automatically considered Russian, unless convincing evidence is provided to the contrary.”
This innovation should stop schemes where Russian gas is simply “mixed” with other flows and sold under the guise of fuel from alternative sources. In the future, this approach will also make it impossible to circumvent sanctions through so-called “swap” agreements – that is, replacing Russian supplies with gas from other countries.
Recall that in July, Russia reduced rail exports of liquefied gas to foreign markets. According to estimates, 261 thousand tons of the resource were delivered last month – 5% less than in June.
As reported, during a meeting of representatives of EU countries, Austrian State Secretary Elisabeth Zehtner called on Brussels to “leave room for reconsideration of the position on Russian energy supplies” after peace is achieved.
