Nobel Prize in Economics 2026: Who won the award?

On Monday, October 12, the winners of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Economics were announced. The award went to American economists Robert Hall and Michael Woodford for research that helped to better understand the mechanisms of economic stabilization.

This was reported by the Nobel Foundation.

The scientists received the prize for establishing the microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilization. Their research became the basis for the development of New Keynesian models, with which economists analyze the impact of government policies on economic growth and business activity.

Today, these models are used by central banks and finance ministries in many countries. They help assess the consequences of economic decisions, predict changes, and find ways to overcome crises.

Other researchers have since continued to refine these models and adapt them to new economic conditions. In particular, Hall and Woodford’s work has helped governments and financial institutions respond to the economic consequences of the pandemic and energy crises of recent years.

The Prize in Economics was established by the Central Bank of Sweden in 1968 to celebrate its 300th anniversary. Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, Alfred Nobel did not provide for it in his will.

The laureates are selected by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The award is presented annually on December 10 in Stockholm, along with the other Nobel Prizes.

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to French chemist Henri Kagan of the University of Paris-Sud and Japanese scientist Kenso Soai of the Tokyo University of Science for their discoveries of nonlinear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.

As reported, the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to physicist Francis Galzen . He was recognized for his key contributions to the creation of the IceCube neutrino observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

Previously, the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel. The scientists were recognized for the discovery of light-gated ion channels and the development of optogenetics.
