North Korea launches ballistic missiles towards Japan twice in a day

North Korea launched two ballistic missiles from the country’s east coast on September 20. The missiles flew approximately 450 km and more than 600 km towards the East Sea.

The first launch of the short-range Hwasong-11 missile was recorded at around 3:00 p.m. from the Wonsan area. Three hours later, the DPRK carried out a second launch.

The launches were monitored by intelligence services from South Korea, the United States and Japan. South Korea’s National Security Council called on Pyongyang to stop the missile tests, calling them a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said that North Korea’s actions pose a threat to the peace and security of Japan, the region, and the international community.

North Korea has previously said it could resort to nuclear retaliation if the US and South Korea consider it a threat to its security. Pyongyang called Washington and Seoul’s decision to strengthen their deterrence system against North Korea a critical security challenge.
