The most powerful solar storm in over 20 years is currently approaching Earth. The flux of solar particles has reached levels that pose a threat to technological systems and aviation. Aurora borealis was observed over Ukraine as early as the evening of January 19, and a powerful magnetic storm is expected across the planet on January 20.
This was reported by scientists at the SWPC Space Weather Prediction Center. They are monitoring a level S4 radiation storm. It could cause disruptions to orbital satellites and errors in navigation systems. Experts warn of radiation hazards for aircraft crews flying at high altitudes. Interruptions in radio communications are possible in polar zones.
The last time a storm of this magnitude was observed was in October 2003. The current radiation storm will lead to high geomagnetic activity, with the index reaching K-8, as early as January 20.
The effects of the solar storm were already felt over Ukraine at the end of January 19. In particular, a veritable aurora borealis could be seen in the night sky over the Kyiv region.
The northern lights were also observed over other regions of Ukraine, in particular, over the Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.
Researchers point out that the highest S5 intensity level remains theoretical and has never been measured in reality. Absolute records belong to the last century, when the proton concentration reached 40,000 units. Currently, the proton concentration has crossed the 17,500-unit mark.
