Northern Ukraine under increased control: what is known about the new measures

The Security Service of Ukraine, together with the Defense Forces, have strengthened security measures in the northern regions of the country. The decision was made in accordance with the instructions of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
As reported by the SBU, this concerns a complex of actions in the Chernihiv, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Volyn, and Rivne regions – that is, in the regions bordering Russia and Belarus.
“These measures are unprecedented in terms of the number of forces and assets involved in the territories bordering Russia and Belarus and will be an effective deterrent to any aggressive actions,” the SBU noted.
The work is coordinated by the Anti-Terrorism Center of the Security Service of Ukraine. The National Police, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, and the State Border Service are also involved in the activities.
The department explained that the main goal is to counter sabotage and enemy intelligence activities.
“The work is aimed at preventing the enemy from penetrating the border areas, committing sabotage and terrorist acts, and conducting subversive and reconnaissance activities,” the report says.
As part of the measures, security forces will conduct checks on citizens, inspect certain territories and premises, and inspect transport. Temporary traffic restrictions and additional control procedures are possible in some settlements.
The SBU emphasized that the actions are taking place within the framework of martial law and in compliance with the law, and called on citizens to be understanding of possible inconveniences.
As a reminder, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with the heads of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the General Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, the Central Military District of the Ukrainian SSR, and the Security Service of Ukraine on the security situation and Russia’s actions. They discussed Russia’s attempts to increase Belarus’ involvement in the war against Ukraine and possible threats in certain areas.
As reported, Belarus, together with the Russian Federation, has begun military exercises that practice the delivery of nuclear munitions and preparation for their use.
