Norway has limited protection for Ukrainian men: who does this affect?
Norway is changing the rules for Ukrainian refugees – men aged 18-60 will no longer receive collective protection.
This is reported by the Norwegian government.
According to Justice Minister Astri Aas-Hansen, the country has already accepted the largest number of Ukrainians among the Scandinavian countries and is facing an overloaded system and a housing shortage.
After the changes, men of draft age are not covered by the collective protection program, which provides for simplified obtaining of a residence permit.
They will now only be able to apply through the standard asylum procedure with individual consideration. The government notes that only a small proportion of such applications receive a positive decision.
The restrictions only apply to new applicants and do not affect those who already have temporary protection.
Who is exempt?
Exceptions were provided for certain categories:
- men under 18 and over 60 years old
- persons unfit for military service
- evacuated within the framework of medical programs
- men who raise children alone
The new rules will come into effect soon.
