Russia may intensify its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with the onset of the autumn-winter period. Not only generation and heat supply facilities, but also the gas transportation system and gas production enterprises may be under threat.
This was reported by Andriy Chernyak, a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.
“We believe that in the autumn-winter period, in addition to facilities that provide electricity production and heat supply, the gas transportation system and gas production facilities in the Poltava and Kharkiv regions may also be under threat of attacks,” Chernyak said.
According to him, Russian strikes could also be directed at the infrastructure that ensures the withdrawal of gas from underground storage facilities and its import from European countries.
At the same time, Ukraine has already accumulated almost 14 billion cubic meters of gas. However, these reserves are not enough to fully meet its needs in the winter period, so the country needs to continue importing.
Earlier, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal estimated the need for additional financing for gas purchases at least EUR 400 million. However, this amount is only a minimum estimate of the necessary purchases.
