Not peace, but “split”: what the Kremlin expects from the meeting between Putin and Trump
The American Institute for the Study of War reported that the Kremlin plans to turn the planned summit in Alaska into a tool of informational and diplomatic influence to undermine the unity of the United States and Europe in support of Ukraine.
This is stated in the ISW report.
According to analysts, Russia is using peaceful rhetoric to cover up its own strategy aimed at weakening Western support for Ukraine. In particular, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stated on August 10 that it is Europe that is allegedly preventing the United States from “stopping the war.” On August 9, LDPR leader Leonid Slutsky accused European countries of pursuing an anti-Russian policy and hindering “a quick peace.”
Russian political scientist Sergei Markov bluntly stated that Moscow’s main task at the summit is to present Ukraine and Europe as the main culprits for prolonging the war . He also confirmed that the Kremlin is not ready to retreat and is considering a compromise only in the form of abandoning offensive actions in the Odessa, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Zaporizhia regions.
According to Markov, Russia hopes that US President Donald Trump will recognize Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky as the main culprit in the conflict, and European leaders as the “second cause.”
Ukrainian and European officials, including Zelensky, have repeatedly expressed their readiness for meaningful negotiations and real ceasefire agreements. However, Moscow has systematically rejected such initiatives, seeking to gain battlefield advantage and additional concessions from Ukraine and the West.
ISW emphasized that the Kremlin has long been trying to undermine unity between the US, the EU, and Ukraine in order to reduce the level of support for Kyiv and maintain its military goals — preventing Ukraine from joining NATO, establishing a pro-Russian government in Kyiv, and demilitarizing the country.
Analysts also warned that even if a ceasefire agreement is reached, Russia will most likely violate it, accusing Ukraine of breaking the agreements, as it already did in the spring of 2025.
Recall that US President Donald Trump informed European leaders of his intention to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin , and later to organize a trilateral meeting with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. By the way, the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin is scheduled for the end of next week .
It is worth adding that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is not going to withdraw his troops from the territory of the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions , which are currently under the control of the Russian Federation.
Earlier, on August 9 , a meeting of national security advisers of Ukraine, the United States, and European states took place in the United Kingdom . As is known, during the summit , Ukraine and Europe presented their own plan to the United States , which should become the basis for negotiations with the Russian side.
