As Donald Trump tries to push through a peace deal on Ukraine, European leaders are sounding the alarm over a possible threat to their countries.

According to The Wall Street Journal, representatives of European security services are urging the public to prepare for a potential conflict with Russia — a scenario that seemed like fantasy just a few years ago.

The European capital fears that Trump’s proposals could force Ukraine to accept unprofitable compromises. This, experts say, would strengthen Putin’s position and leave Kyiv vulnerable to future attacks. In addition, the cessation of hostilities could allow Moscow to divert military resources to threats in Europe.

Additionally, there are doubts that the US would intervene quickly if Russia did strike. The recent US National Security Strategy does not mention Russia as an enemy for the first time in recent years, which is causing concern among European experts.

Retired admiral from the Netherlands Rob Bauer emphasizes: Europe can only keep the peace by preparing for war, which will allow to restrain Putin. He also pointed out that the Russian military-industrial complex produces more equipment and weapons than are needed for the war in Ukraine, which accelerates the likelihood of an attack on European countries.

Politicians admit that convincing citizens of the need for war is difficult. A Gallup poll found that only a third of Europeans are willing to defend their country, compared to 41% in the United States.

European officials note that society will support increased defense spending and even the restoration of conscription only if it perceives a real threat.

European intelligence agencies are already recording Russian actions in the “gray zone”: economic sabotage, cyberattacks and espionage. Germany suspects that these operations are partly preparing NATO’s logistical network for a possible attack on Poland and the Baltic states.

France is reinstating voluntary military service for young people, following the example of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. German troops are training intensively, practicing rapid deployment to the front. Great Britain is reducing military operations outside Europe to focus on the Russian direction. NATO countries have also agreed to increase defense spending.

However, most of the population has not yet felt these changes. At the same time, the military emphasizes that resources will have to be significantly increased if Europe is to effectively deter potential aggression from Moscow.

Let us remind you that the Kremlin is discussing a possible scenario of Russia’s invasion of NATO countries , and Western intelligence already has evidence of such conversations.

As reported, the European Union plans to involve Ukrainian army soldiers to protect the eastern borders from Russia.
