The Taliban’s main intelligence department has launched a large-scale investigation into the activities of Russian and Belarusian agents in Afghanistan. The intelligence services suspect representatives of the “allied state” of attempting to use the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” to provoke a new wave of tension between the East and the West.

This was reported by the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine (FIS).

According to Ukrainian intelligence, an agent network has already been created in Afghanistan, the main goal of which is to organize a clash of interests between foreign states on Afghan territory.

The department recalled that on July 3, Russia became the first country in the world to formally recognize the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.” After that, on July 7, the head of the Taliban’s GUR counterintelligence, Asadullah Baryalai, drew attention in his official letter to the sharp increase in the number of Russian “tourists”, journalists and other visitors to the country, among whom, according to him, there may be many special services employees.

In his September address, Baryalai directly emphasized the need to take specific measures to limit the activities of Russian and Belarusian agents. In particular, this includes strengthening border control, checking the permits of foreigners, and monitoring contacts between representatives of Afghan structures and citizens of the “union state.”

The SZRU notes that the intensification of counterintelligence measures by the “Taliban” may indicate a loss of trust in Russian and Belarusian “partners” against the backdrop of growing geopolitical tension in the region.

It is worth adding that in July 2025, Russia officially recognized the rule of the “Taliban” in Afghanistan , becoming the first country to take such a step after the Taliban seized power in 2021.

Recall that in 2023, the Taliban, the ruling political force in Afghanistan, announced that it would officially ban the activities of all political parties in the country.
