Iran’s ambassador to the UN nuclear agency said that a nuclear facility was hit during a US and Israeli military operation.
This was reported by the Reuters news agency.
“Yesterday they again attacked Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities that are under protection,” the ambassador said at a meeting of the IAEA Board of Directors.
According to him, a facility in the Iranian city of Natanz was hit.
However, as IAEA chief Rafael Grossi noted, there is currently no indication that any nuclear facilities in Iran have been damaged, the Times of India quoted him as saying.
The official called the situation in the Middle East “very worrying.” He called on the parties to “exercise maximum restraint” to avoid further escalation.
“Iran and many other countries in the region that have been subjected to military attacks have operating nuclear power plants and research nuclear reactors, as well as associated fuel storage facilities, which increases the threat to nuclear security,” Grossi emphasized.
As he noted, one should not ignore the potential consequences of a possible radiological release, including the need to evacuate large areas.
“The IAEA has in-depth knowledge of the nature and location of nuclear and radiological materials in the region, and we have clear guidance on the actions required in the event of an attack or accident that would cause a radiological release,” the head of the atomic energy agency added.
Recall that on February 28, Israel launched preemptive strikes on Iran, as well as attacked Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon . A state of emergency was declared throughout the country.
It later emerged that the strikes on Iran were a joint operation between Israel and the US . After that, US President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States had launched a military campaign in Iran .
