Ukraine’s Strikes Hit Hard: Russian Oil Refining Sinks to 16-Year Low

Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries in May were the most extensive since the start of the full-scale war. Against this backdrop, Russia banned the export of jet fuel, fearing a shortage on the domestic market.

According to the publication, the ban will be in effect until at least the end of November. Moscow fears a fuel shortage amid growing demand and reduced oil refining volumes.
The decision was made after a series of attacks by Ukrainian drones on Russian oil infrastructure. In May alone, Ukraine launched at least 30 strikes on Russian oil assets, a record for the entire duration of the great war.
In particular, eight of Russia’s ten largest oil refineries were hit last month.
As Bloomberg notes, the effects of the attacks have already affected the industry. According to estimates by analytical company OilX, average daily oil refining in Russia in May was about 4.58 million barrels. This is 13% less than in the same period last year and the lowest figure since October 2009.
The publication notes that Ukraine has changed its approach to attacks on Russian refineries. While previously the main target was primary processing facilities, which are relatively quickly restored, attacks are now increasingly directed at secondary processing facilities. Their repair requires significantly more time and money.
Additional difficulties for the Russian oil industry are created by Western sanctions, which complicate the supply of necessary equipment and spare parts.
According to Bloomberg, the combination of these factors increases the risks for the Russian fuel market and forces the Russian authorities to take additional measures to avoid fuel shortages and price spikes within the country.

As reported, on the night of Wednesday, May 20, drones attacked the city of Nevinnomyssk in the Stavropol Territory of Russia. The strike is believed to have hit the Nevinnomyssk Azot chemical plant, causing a fire in the industrial zone.
