The European Union is preparing a new, unprecedentedly tough package of sanctions against Russia — the initiative was proposed by France and is being implemented in cooperation with American senators.
This was stated by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot in a comment to the TF1 television channel.
According to the diplomat, the decision was made against the backdrop of a sharp increase in Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities after US President Donald Trump’s proposal for a temporary ceasefire. Ukraine supported the initiative, but the Kremlin, on the contrary, intensified shelling – their number increased fivefold.
“This cannot continue any longer. We must stop this. That is why, in coordination with American senators, we are working on a new package of sanctions, which will be the strongest in the last three years. Its goal is to undermine the financial resources on which the Russian military machine is based,” said Barrow.
This time, the focus is not only on Russia’s energy sector – in particular, revenues from oil exports – but also on banking structures and individuals who facilitate the circumvention of existing sanctions both inside and outside Russia. France is convinced that it is these “circumvention schemes” that allow the Kremlin to maintain the ability to continue the war despite the sanctions pressure.
Barrot also stressed that Russia is currently not making progress on the front and has focused on shelling civilian infrastructure. “Putin is not making progress. He is simply terrorizing the civilian population with drones and missiles. This must be stopped,” the minister stressed.
As a reminder, the United Kingdom has imposed new sanctions against the Russian Federation in response to the use of chemical weapons by the Russian occupiers on the front, which is a violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
As reported, the European Union officially extended sectoral sanctions against Russia for six months .
