Belgium has unveiled a major aid package for Ukraine, including €1 billion annually, F-16 fighter jets, and support for rebuilding infrastructure. Brussels also plans to contribute to a post-ceasefire peacekeeping mission and use frozen Russian assets to fund Ukrainian schools, hospitals, and the energy sector.

On May 25, a press conference was held in Odesa with Belgium’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Prevost, who outlined the country’s comprehensive support plan for Ukraine. According to Prevost, the assistance will encompass military, economic, and humanitarian components.

On the military front, Belgium has pledged €1 billion annually until 2029. The funds will support mine-clearing ships, underwater drones, and participation in key coalitions for air defense and mine clearance operations.

Special attention is being given to aviation support: several F-16 fighters from Belgium are expected to be delivered to Ukraine in September. Additionally, €20 million has been allocated to support the Ukrainian Food Initiative, highlighting Ukraine’s role as the world’s breadbasket.

Belgium also confirmed its readiness to join a post-ceasefire peacekeeping mission within the framework of the “Coalition of the Willing.” Prevost noted that the format of participation and the scale of the military contribution will be determined jointly with the Ukrainian government and the Belgian Ministry of Defense.

Economic aid will focus on infrastructure reconstruction, with frozen Russian assets earmarked for the restoration of schools, hospitals, and energy systems. Prevost emphasized that the assistance is long-term and concrete, and that Belgium intends to remain a reliable partner to Kyiv at all levels.

“Our support for Ukraine is not limited to military supplies. We are investing in the country’s future and helping to restore what the war has destroyed,” the minister said.

Recall that on May 26, the last of the 24 F-16 fighters that the Dutch authorities promised to transfer to Ukraine already took off from Volkel Air Base.

It was previously reported that Belgium plans to transfer 20 Berber-type air defense systems to Ukraine as part of a military assistance package for 2025.
