Residents of the Canadian province of Alberta have voted against starting the process of secession from Canada. According to preliminary results of the referendum, 77% of voters supported keeping the province as part of the country.

This is reported by CBC News.

The referendum was held on October 19. About 23% of participants supported starting the procedure for the possible separation of Alberta.

The vote did not involve the province’s immediate secession from Canada. A victory for independence supporters would have triggered preparations for a new, legally binding referendum.

The result was a political victory for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who had opposed secession. The final vote results are due to be announced on October 29.

Alberta is an oil-rich province with a population of about five million people. The region has a long-standing independence movement.

Recall that previously, US President Donald Trump proposed that Canada become the 51st American state . He argued that this would allow Canadians to receive lower taxes and better military protection.

Trump has also joked about Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela joining the U.S. During a speech at a closed event in February 2026, he again mentioned Canada as a potential 51st state.
