On board the MV Hondius cruise ship, where hantavirus was detected, the evacuation of part of the crew, including Ukrainian citizens, has begun. One Ukrainian is to be transported to the Netherlands by a separate special flight, while four more Ukrainian citizens remain on the ship and continue to perform their official duties.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the evacuation of one Ukrainian citizen will take place as part of the organized removal of part of the crew from the liner. Upon arrival in the Netherlands, the crew members will undergo a medical examination and be quarantined in a specialized medical facility.

The agency also noted that, according to the ship’s operator, none of the Ukrainians remaining on board have shown symptoms of the disease.

Ukrainian consular services are maintaining contact with the citizen who is planned to be evacuated and coordinating his further return. The situation is under the control of the Department of Consular Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, as well as the diplomatic missions of Ukraine in the Netherlands, Spain and the consulate in Malaga.

Meanwhile, French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that a French citizen began showing symptoms of hantavirus during a charter flight from Tenerife to Paris.

“All 5 evacuees from the MV Hondius were immediately placed in strict isolation until further notice,” Lecornu said.

It is noted that more than 90 passengers and crew members have already been evacuated from the ship. Some people were taken to France, Spain, the Netherlands, the United States and other countries on special flights.

The US Department of Health and Human Services reported that one of the evacuated passengers from the US began to show mild symptoms of hantavirus, and another tested weakly positive for the Andes strain.

According to journalists, three passengers had previously died on board the ship, two of whom tested positive for hantavirus. The ship arrived at the port of Granadilla in the Canary Islands on May 10, after which a large-scale operation to evacuate passengers and crew began.

It was previously reported that 6 cases of infection were confirmed on the MV Hondius cruise ship, where an outbreak of hantavirus was previously recorded, and 2 new suspected cases were identified in Spain and the island of Tristan da Cunha . 3 people have died as a result of the outbreak, and the WHO continues to assess the risks of the spread of the infection.

Recall that a cruise ship MV Hondius in the Atlantic Ocean has experienced a suspected outbreak of a rare hantavirus , resulting in the deaths of 3 people and the illness of at least 3 others. One of the patients is in intensive care in South Africa, and the WHO is conducting an epidemiological investigation.
