The Supreme Anti-Corruption Court has chosen a preventive measure for Yulia Tymoshenko within the framework of criminal proceedings on suspicion of bribing people’s deputies regarding votes in the Verkhovna Rada. The court has set a preventive measure in the form of a bail of more than 33 million hryvnias. The people’s deputy has also been assigned a number of responsibilities.
In particular, Tymoshenko is obliged to appear at every request of NABU detectives and the court, not to travel outside the Kyiv region, refrain from communicating with a certain circle of persons within the framework of the pre-trial investigation, and surrender her international passport.
During the court hearing, prosecutor Vitaliy Grinchyshyn specified the list of obligations that, in the opinion of the prosecution, should be imposed on Tymoshenko. These include appearing at every request to the NABU, restrictions on movement, a ban on communicating with 66 people, including people’s deputies, surrendering her passport, and wearing an electronic monitoring device.
Speaking about the circumstances of the case, Tymoshenko stated that she had meetings with Igor Kopytin, a member of parliament from the Servant of the People faction, who appears in the NABU records. According to her, he repeatedly initiated meetings and offered cooperation.
Tymoshenko also stated that Ihor Kopytin, according to her, is cooperating with NABU in order to avoid criminal liability and discredit her.
“Mr. Kopytin, together with NABU, tried, on the one hand, to rid himself of the criminal case, and on the other, to discredit me as a people’s deputy,” said Yulia Tymoshenko.
The prosecution’s position is based on the materials of searches conducted at the party office. According to the prosecutor, 6 phones were seized, one of which had only the Signal messenger installed. The NABU materials note that it was through this messenger that instructions on voting were allegedly given in a closed chat.
The prosecutor named 5 main risks, including the possibility of hiding from the investigation, destruction or concealment of evidence, illegal influence on witnesses and people’s deputies, as well as the use of financial opportunities to avoid responsibility.
“A personal obligation cannot be a proper deterrent given the existing risks at this stage of the proceedings,” said Vitaliy Grinchyshyn.
The defense, in turn, stated that the risks cited by the prosecution are unfounded. The lawyer noted that the requirement to surrender a foreign passport limits Tymoshenko’s activities as the leader of a political party.
The defense also opposed wearing an electronic monitoring device.
“Wearing an electronic bracelet in the winter is actually torture,” the lawyer said.
In addition, the defense requested that Igor Kopytin be summoned for questioning. Prosecutors stated that they did not see this as appropriate and considered such actions as delaying the process. The court denied the request.
Following the results of the hearing, the court partially satisfied the prosecution’s motion and granted Yulia Tymoshenko a preventive measure in the form of bail in the amount of over 33 million hryvnias with a specified list of procedural obligations.
The day before, it became known that on Friday, January 16, the head of the Batkivshchyna faction, Yulia Tymoshenko, arrived at the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court in Kyiv , where the consideration of the issue of choosing a preventive measure for her began.
