Ukraine will introduce harsh penalties for students skipping school, including fining parents and being wanted by the police.

This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine.

Under its Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovy, violations of children’s right to education will now be recorded, and then the causes of the violation will be investigated together with the Juvenile Police.

He stressed that the responsible authorities will be “tougher” on skipping school classes.

“Today we are talking about synchronizing actions by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in particular the National Police, which should monitor the fact of the child’s presence in an educational institution. And in the event of the child’s absence for a long period of time, we should signal this to both the Children’s Service and the National Police, which should make efforts to find the child. After that, depending on the reason, certain liability mechanisms are activated,” explained Deputy Minister Nadia Kuzmychova.

The official emphasized that this is not a new approach. The ministry is now returning to mechanisms that were inactive during the pandemic and the war.

At the same time, the educational ombudsman Nadiya Leszczyk proposes to increase parental responsibility for children’s truancy and reduce the number of days allowed not to attend school without a medical certificate to 5.

As Interfax-Ukraine notes, according to the legislation, evasion of parents from fulfilling their obligations to ensure the necessary living conditions, education, and upbringing of young or underage children entails a fine of up to 1,700 hryvnias, and the same actions committed repeatedly within a year – up to 5,100 hryvnias.
