Parliament dissolved in Serbia: Vucic announces early elections

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic dissolved the country’s parliament on Wednesday, paving the way for early elections.

In a televised address, Vučić explained the decision by the long-standing political tensions and conflicts, without which, he said, there would be no need for early elections.
The president also stated that further delay in holding the vote could jeopardize democracy in the country.
Vucic has been in power for 12 years, first as prime minister and then as president. Serbia has been gripped by anti-corruption protests for almost two years. They began after a canopy collapsed at the Novi Sad train station in November 2024, killing 16 people.
At the same time, Vucic retains the support of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, which on Saturday nominated him as its candidate for prime minister if it wins the upcoming parliamentary elections.
It is currently unknown whether Vučić will remain president until the elections are held or whether he will leave office after them.
It was previously reported that large-scale protests and clashes between demonstrators and police took place in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. The participants of the action demanded the resignation of President Aleksandar Vucic and the holding of early parliamentary elections.
