Part of Ukraine may be left without heating in winter: which regions are at risk

Volodymyr Omelchenko, Director of Energy and Infrastructure Programs at the Razumkov Center, reported that there is a serious threat of disruption of the heating season in certain regions in Ukraine due to massive Russian shelling of energy infrastructure.

He spoke about this on the air of “KYIV24” .

According to Omelchenko, due to continuous Russian attacks, some Ukrainian regions may face winter without heating.

“This is especially true of frontline territories, where shelling of energy facilities occurs constantly. The situation is also difficult in Kryvyi Rih, which has been subjected to numerous attacks, and in the Kharkiv and Odessa regions,” the expert explained.

The main sources of heat in Ukraine remain natural gas and coal. So far, about 2.6 million tons of coal and 11 billion cubic meters of gas have been accumulated in storage facilities. However, this is not enough to ensure a stable winter.

“To guarantee a normal heating season, at least 14.5 billion cubic meters of gas are needed,” Omelchenko emphasized.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia is deliberately trying to disrupt Ukraine’s preparations for winter, striking not only at power plants and heat supply facilities, but also at natural gas production.

Thus, the upcoming heating season may become one of the most difficult for Ukrainians since the start of the full-scale war.

It was previously reported that due to Russia’s attacks on gas production facilities, Ukraine will be forced to increase gas imports from abroad .
