On the evening of July 27, a large-scale railway tragedy occurred in the southern German state of Baden-Württemberg – a regional express train derailed. According to preliminary information, the accident was caused by a landslide caused by heavy rain. At least three people died, and about 50 more passengers were injured to varying degrees.

This is reported by the Bild newspaper.

The accident occurred near the Biberach district in Baden-Württemberg. According to Bild, citing police and fire department data, two carriages of a regional train derailed, causing extensive damage and casualties.

The cause of the accident was a landslide that had previously occurred after heavy rains. The German weather service recorded local downpours with a rainfall of 30–40 liters per square meter in a short time. This weather likely triggered the landslide that covered the railway track.

“There was heavy rainfall in the region, so we do not rule out that the accident was a result of bad weather and the associated landslide,” said Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Thomas Strobl, who visited the scene.

According to Charlotte Ziller, the head of the Biberach district fire department, a railway worker is among the dead, but the personal details of the deceased are not being disclosed at this time.

A rescue operation was immediately launched at the scene, involving dozens of rescuers, medics, and police officers. The services used special equipment to cut through the bodies of the carriages to free the passengers trapped inside.

The victims’ belongings were left near the tracks, and an investigation team is working at the scene. Medics are providing assistance to approximately 50 injured people, some of whom are in serious condition.

The accident was one of the worst rail tragedies in Germany in recent years. Regional authorities have promised to provide support to the families of the victims and to conduct a full investigation into the incident.

Recall that in the German city of Passau, a man drove a car into a crowd , injuring at least five people.
