Germany will finance new deliveries of American weapons to Ukraine totaling $500 million. Part of the funds will go to air defense ammunition, including missiles for Patriot systems.
This was stated by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius before a meeting of the heads of defense departments of NATO countries in Brussels, Ukrinform reports.
According to the German minister, Berlin will join the PURL mechanism for the fourth time, through which allies finance the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine.
“With PURL, we are funding American weapons systems and ammunition that Ukraine urgently needs, that can be delivered earlier, and that are not produced in Europe,” Pistorius said.
He emphasized that this time Germany’s contribution to the program will be $300 million. The main emphasis will be on ammunition for Ukrainian air defense.
“In this case, we are primarily talking about such desperately needed ammunition for air defense systems. Thanks to this, we literally save human lives every night and every day,” the head of the German Defense Ministry noted.
In addition, Berlin will allocate another $200 million under the Jumpstart program. These funds will be used to purchase PAC-3 guided interceptor missiles for the American Patriot systems.
“My Ukrainian colleague Mykhailo Fedorov asked me to support the so-called Jumpstart program. It is designed primarily to ensure the purchase of special guided missiles for Patriot systems,” Pistorius said.
He added that Germany wants to involve other partners from the Contact Group on Defense Issues in Ukraine in financing the purchase of PAC-3 missiles.
The new support package should strengthen the capabilities of Ukrainian air defense against the backdrop of regular Russian missile and drone attacks.
As reported, German defense company Diehl Defence is in talks with Ukrainian company Fire Point regarding the possible joint production of Flamingo cruise missiles in Germany . The parties plan to hold a series of meetings in the coming weeks to discuss potential cooperation.
