On Thursday, January 29, the Council of Europe imposed sanctions against Iran for supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine and human rights violations within the country.

This is stated on the Council of Europe website.

As it is noted, Russian military support is a serious threat to the security of the European Union. Therefore, four more individuals and six companies have been placed under restrictions under the EU’s special sanctions regime, with a particular focus on Iran’s state program for the development and production of unmanned aerial vehicles.

In particular, the sanctions affected a leading company in Iran’s ballistic missile program and a company that handles imports and exports for the country’s Ministry of Defense and army, as well as a number of private companies that supply critical components to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Among the sanctioned individuals are businessmen, CEOs, and shareholders of private companies engaged in the production and development of ballistic missiles.

At the same time, the Council extended the ban on the export, sale, transfer or supply from the EU to Iran to include additional components and technologies used for the production of drones.

“This applies to special materials and related equipment, including energetic materials and their mixtures, materials processing, electronics, computers, telecommunications and information security, sensors and lasers, navigation and avionics, aerospace engineering and propulsion systems, as well as technologies designed or specially adapted for the testing, development or production of unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles,” the message states.

Separately, 15 individuals were sanctioned for repression of citizens, including Iran’s Minister of Interior, the Chairman of the National Security Council, members of the judiciary, and six companies.

The restrictions include an asset freeze, a ban on travel to the EU, and the provision of funds or economic resources to sanctioned individuals.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga welcomed this decision by the Council of Europe.

“Continued sanctions pressure is a vital tool for deterring aggression and upholding international law. Ukraine highly appreciates the EU’s leadership and expects an even tougher 20th package of sanctions against Russia,” he wrote.

Recall that the EU has information about Iran sending ballistic missiles to Russia , but there is currently no guaranteed evidence of this.
