The parliament of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt has called for an end to arms supplies to Ukraine, a halt to financial aid beyond humanitarian needs, and the lifting of sanctions against Russia. The deputies also proposed seeking neutral status for Ukraine as part of a future peace settlement.
This was reported on the official website of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt.
The resolution, titled “Peace Talks Instead of Expanding the War in Ukraine,” was submitted for consideration by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and the left-wing populist Alliance for Social Justice and Economic Common Sense (BSW). The document was adopted on October 14.
The resolution calls for the immediate lifting of economic sanctions against the Russian Federation and the cessation of military support for Ukraine.
“Financial support to Ukraine should be immediately terminated if it goes beyond humanitarian assistance. The supply of weapons to Ukraine should be stopped. Additional military supplies only prolong the war and increase the risk of further escalation,” the document states.
The authors of the resolution argue that the sanctions policy, arms supplies, and financial assistance to Ukraine have not achieved their goal. In their opinion, these measures do not contribute to ending the war, but instead create the risk of its spread to other states.
Instead, the deputies propose to focus on diplomatic negotiations and the normalization of relations between Germany and Russia. They also named Ukraine’s neutral status as one of the conditions for a long-term settlement.
The state parliament has called on the Saxony-Anhalt government to use available political tools to advance these demands. In particular, it is proposed to initiate a corresponding issue in the Bundesrat, the body through which the federal states participate in the German legislative process.
During the vote, the resolution was supported by the AfD and BSW deputies. Representatives of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the Greens and the Left Party spoke against it.
