The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded Raytheon Technologies a $3.5 billion contract to produce AMRAAM aircraft missiles and related equipment for Ukraine and 18 other partner countries.
This is stated on the Pentagon website.
Among the countries that will be supplied with the missiles are Denmark, Belgium, Japan, the Netherlands, Canada, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Taiwan, Lithuania, the United Kingdom, Australia, Switzerland, Israel and Kuwait.
The contract covers the production of the missiles themselves, telemetry systems, spare parts and engineering support. All work will be performed in Tucson, Arizona. Completion of the contract is scheduled for the third quarter of fiscal year 2031.
What is known about AMRAAM missiles?
AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) missiles are the main armament of the F-15, F-16, F/A-18 and F-22 fighters. Their cost ranges from $1.2 to $1.97 million per unit, depending on the modification.
These missiles are also adapted for use in NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems, which are in service with Ukraine. Standard AMRAAM missiles can hit targets at a distance of up to 25 km, and improved AMRAAM ER – up to 40 km. The range of air targets in certain configurations can exceed 100 km, and the probability of destruction – up to 85%.
As reported, the administration of US President Donald Trump this week held regular talks with Russian representatives, trying to find ways to end the war in Ukraine. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the dialogue did not bring any tangible results, and Moscow continues to shell Ukrainian cities with missiles.
As a reminder, the US Senate Appropriations Committee has supported a military budget with about $1 billion in aid to Ukraine , despite the fact that the Donald Trump administration proposed to exclude these expenses. The funds will be used to provide weapons, equipment, training and intelligence to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the war against Russia.
