US President Donald Trump and his representatives have held a series of talks on the war in Ukraine, but Russia has stuck to its maximalist demands. As a result, a resolution to the conflict has been delayed, and attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure continue.
This is reported by The Hill .
After meeting with Trump in Davos, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the document on security guarantees for Ukraine from the United States is 100 percent ready and is awaiting confirmation of the signing date.
Trump said a resolution to the war “will come very soon,” but talks between special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and then in the United Arab Emirates failed to produce results.
In Abu Dhabi, Russia refused to back down on its demands and continues to insist on the unilateral withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas. Ukraine refuses to make territorial concessions that Russia cannot obtain on the battlefield.
The Hill’s Jonathan Sweet and Mark Toth have noted that the more Russia resists, the more pressure the Trump team will put on Ukraine. “Any less intervention will mean perpetual war for the Trump team in Europe,” they argue.
The authors note that Putin is the “root cause” of the war, and the killing of civilians will only stop when Russia stops attacking. Destroying Moscow’s ability to finance and support the war and providing Kyiv with sufficient weapons are key conditions for ending the conflict.
“Any negotiations that do not force Russia to abandon its territorial claims and attacks only prolong the war,” the experts concluded.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said thatactive work is underway to resolve the territorial issue of Donetsk in US-brokered talks to end Russia’s war in Ukraine , calling this disagreement a key issue that is “very difficult” to resolve.
Recall that Washington told Ukraine that it must sign a peace agreement with Russia in order to receive US security guarantees.
