Peru has reported the deaths of citizens recruited by Russia to fight in the war against Ukraine.

For the first time, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially released information about its citizens recruited by Russia to fight in the war against Ukraine.

According to the department, 459 Peruvians have joined the Russian troops.

As of August 9, 11 Peruvian citizens are known to have died. Another 114 Peruvians are missing, and three have been captured by Ukrainian forces, EFE reports.

“Officially, 459 Peruvians were enlisted in the Russian army. Unfortunately, 11 were killed, 114 were missing, and three were captured by the Ukrainian army,” the Peruvian Foreign Ministry stated.

Thirty-one Peruvian citizens were also evacuated from Russia. Twenty-eight of them have already returned home, while three others have decided to remain in Europe.

The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged citizens to be cautious about job offers abroad, warning that such advertisements may serve as a cover for criminal networks involved in human trafficking.

Last week, relatives of Peruvians recruited by Russia protested at the Russian embassy in Lima. They demanded that their loved ones be returned home and their whereabouts be disclosed.

According to relatives, they have already filed official complaints about possible kidnapping and human trafficking. Meanwhile, according to the recruited families, the recruiters who, they claim, deceived their loved ones into joining the Russian army remain at large, and the prosecutor’s office is making virtually no progress in the relevant cases.
