Peskov on Donbas: Zelensky must make a decision today

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is supposed to make a decision to withdraw Ukrainian troops from Donbas “today.”

He made this statement during a briefing on April 1.

“As for two months, it’s not about two months. Zelenskyy must make a decision today to have Ukrainian troops leave the territory of Donbas and go beyond the administrative borders of the ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’,” Peskov said.

He also added that, in his opinion, such a decision should have been made earlier.

“In theory, Zelensky should have made such a decision yesterday – as we said, to take responsibility and make such a difficult decision,” the Kremlin representative said.

Peskov claims that the withdrawal of troops could supposedly “save the lives of a large number of people” and “allow us to stop the hot phase of this war.”

He also commented on the pause in negotiations between Ukraine, the US, and Russia, explaining it by the American side’s busy schedule.

“The pause is due to the fact that American negotiators are currently busy with other matters… and cannot be actively involved in the process,” Peskov said.

As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the US is offering Ukraine a complete withdrawal from Donbas in exchange for security guarantees necessary for a peace agreement.

As previously reported, Russia stated that Ukraine has two months to withdraw from Donbas, otherwise the terms of the war will change.
