Petro Poroshenko on the anniversary of the Maidan shootings: The memory of the events motivates us not to give up.
On the anniversary of the Maidan shootings during the Revolution of Dignity, Petro Poroshenko shared his memories of those events. The fifth President emphasized that unprecedented unity and solidarity, the power of truth, helped us endure.
“On that winter day, at the height of the Revolution of Dignity, Ukrainians stood shoulder to shoulder. All they had were Molotov cocktails and the conviction that they were doing the right thing. The Berkut police were ordered to disperse the peaceful march. They spared neither force nor means. They used everything from tear gas to ballistic missiles. The center of the capital turned into a bloody battlefield. In those days, it seemed as if darkness was enveloping everything. Authoritarianism was advancing, and democracy was struggling with its last strength,” Poroshenko recalled.
“But Ukrainians continued to stand up for their own dignity and freedom. They didn’t give up or retreat. We all stood side by side and helped the wounded. Meanwhile, Andriy Parubiy, the Maidan commandant, coordinated the Self-Defense Force during the most intense days of the confrontation. This was a daily personal responsibility for the people, for order, for security in the square, which became the heart of the country,” Poroshenko wrote on social media .
“It was precisely this unity—both those who stood at the barricades and those who organized the defense—that enabled us to endure. Within days, Yanukovych fled the country, and the Ukrainians won,” Poroshenko stated.
“We’ve come a long way since then—today, other battles of that war continue. And the memory of those events, of the Heavenly Hundred, and of all who then took responsibility for the fate of the state, should motivate us not to give up now,” writes Petro Poroshenko.
